Mazda unveils new electric SUV EZ-60

Following the launch of the electric sedan EZ-6, the collaboration between Mazda and automotive manufacturer Changan continues with the introduction of another new crossover model – the Mazda EZ-60.

Like the previously showcased EZ-6 sedan, the Mazda EZ-60 is fundamentally built on the modular platform EPA1 developed by Changan. This means it shares very similar specifications with the Deepal S07 crossover.

The exterior design of the Mazda EZ-60 aligns with Mazda’s modern Kodo design philosophy.

Notable features include a grid structure and illuminated front logo, separated headlight design, hidden door handles, and the presence of side cameras.

A striking feature is the air vent located on the C-pillar, designed to reduce drag coefficient, thereby aiding in achieving a longer driving range.

The minimalist approach is also reflected at the rear, where the Mazda EZ-60 features elongated LED tail lights that extend towards the center, along with the word “MAZDA” replacing the traditional logo.

Based on its dimensions, it is highly likely that the Mazda EZ-60 shares nearly identical measurements with the Deepal S07 SUV, as previously presented by Bermaz earlier this year.

In terms of dimensions, the Deepal S07 measures 4,750 mm in length, 1,930 mm in width, 1,625 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,900 mm.

In the Chinese market, the Deepal S07 is available with a single electric motor option producing either 218 hp or 258 hp.

There are two battery pack options available: a 66.8 kWh pack offering a range of 520 km, or a 79.97 kWh pack providing a range of up to 620 km (CLTC data).

More information about this electric SUV will be revealed ahead of the Shanghai Auto Show 2025, which is set to take place later this month.

2025 MGS5 EV previewed in Malaysia – range up to 430 km, estimated price from RM115k

MG Motor Malaysia has recently unveiled an upcoming electric SUV model, the 2025 MGS5 EV.

In terms of dimensions, the MGS5 EV measures 4,476 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width, and has a wheelbase of 2,730 mm.

The cargo space is 452 liters, which expands to 1,441 liters when the second-row seats are folded down.

The MGS5 EV is powered by a rear-wheel drive electric motor that produces 170 PS and 250 Nm of torque.

There are two battery options available: a 49 kWh battery that offers a driving range of 340 km, and a 62 kWh battery that provides a driving range of 430 km.

The MGS5 EV supports 11 kW AC charging as well as fast DC charging up to 88 kW, and it includes a Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function of up to 6.6 kW.

In the cabin, the MGS5 EV features a 10.25-inch display cluster, a 12.8-inch infotainment screen, and connectivity for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The premium variant comes with additional features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic glass roof, powered tailgate, leather and perforated fabric seats, a heated steering wheel, power-adjustable driver’s seat, a premium audio system with six speakers, and a 360-degree surround camera.

Safety features include seven airbags and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS).

There are five attractive color options available: Arctic White, Monument Silver, Camden Grey, Dynamic Red, and Elegant Latte.

Slated for launch soon, the MGS5 EV is expected to be priced around RM115,000.

17 roads to close for the President of China’s visit from April 15-17

A total of 17 routes will be temporarily closed in conjunction with the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping from April 15 to 17.

According to an official statement released by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), full closures or detours will be implemented for a duration of 30 to 45 minutes.

The affected routes will be reopened after the delegation has passed through.

Modenas Elegan 250 EX facelift unveiled – selling price RM17,780

National Motorcycle and Engine Company Sdn Bhd (MODENAS) has introduced the 250 cc scooter, the Elegan 250 EX facelift, featuring new colors and improved features.

It is offered at a price of RM17,780, which is slightly higher compared to the previous model of the Elegan 250 EX two years ago (RM16,997).

For this latest update, the Elegan 250 EX facelift comes with the following features:

  • A sportier windscreen
  • Front LED turn signals
  • Two new colors: Deep Blue and Plain Grey
  • New MODENAS logos

The scooter continues to maintain its single-cylinder 250 cc engine, delivering a power output of 22.4 hp @ 7,000 rpm and a torque of 22.4 Nm @ 6,500 rpm.

Three new colors for 2025 Honda Vario 160 – priced from RM10,198

Boon Siew Honda has announced three appealing color options for the Honda Vario 160 scooter, which include yellow, silver, and matte red.

There are no changes in terms of specifications; it remains equipped with a liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine with a displacement of 157 cc, producing 15.2 hp at 8,500 rpm and a torque of 13.8 Nm at 7,000 rpm.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 5.5 liters, while the seat height is approximately 778 mm.

The Vario 160’s suspension includes telescopic forks in the front, paired with a single rear shock absorber, while the braking system features front and rear disc brakes, supported by a single-channel ABS.

Additional features include a smart key system, full LED lighting, a USB charger, a digital meter display, and a storage compartment of 18 liters.

The Honda Vario 160 2025 is available at all authorized Honda dealers and Impian X starting April 11, 2025, with a starting price of RM10,198 for the yellow color, and RM10,498 for the silver and matte red options.

2025 Audi Q7 open for booking – CKD units, estimated price RM469k-RM489k

PHS Automotive Malaysia (PHSAM), the official distributor of Audi vehicles in Malaysia, has announced the opening of bookings for the flagship Audi Q7 SUV for the local market.

This locally assembled (CKD) Audi SUV is the first of its kind in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, and it will be offered at a sale price ranging from RM469,000 to RM489,000.

From an exterior standpoint, the Audi Q7 features a sporty S line styling package, complemented by the Black Styling Package Plus, which includes the Audi Singleframe, Q7 badge, anthracite grey Audi logo, rear spoiler, and 22-inch Audi Sports rims.

Additionally, the vehicle is equipped with advanced HD matrix LED headlights, which consist of Audi Laser Light and OLED Digital, an adaptive air suspension system, and all-wheel steering capabilities.

The Audi Q7 is powered by a 3.0-liter V6 TFSI engine that produces 340 PS and 500 Nm of torque, paired with an 8-speed Tiptronic transmission and a quattro all-wheel-drive system.

It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.6 seconds, reaching a top speed of 250 km/h.

This powertrain is also enhanced by a 48V mild hybrid (MHEV) technology system for operational efficiency and emissions.

Drivers can choose from up to seven different drive modes through the Audi Drive Select function.

In terms of the cabin, the Audi Q7 features Sports Seat Plus, Valcona leather upholstery, a flat-bottom leather-wrapped steering wheel, paddle shifters, a 30-color ambient lighting package, and a head-up display.

Other features include doors with a soft-close function, a massage function for the front seats, four-zone climate control, wireless smartphone charging slots, and a Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system.

The cargo space is generous, measuring 780 liters, and can extend up to 1,908 liters to accommodate family needs.

There are four color options available, including Glacier White, Waitomo Blue, Mythos Black, and Daytona Grey with a pearl finish.

2025 Porsche 911 officially launched in Malaysia – prices starting from RM1,430,000

Sime Darby Auto Performance, the authorized dealer for Porsche vehicles in Malaysia has officially launched the facelifted version of the Porsche 911 sports car, available in two variants: the 911 Carrera and the 911 Carrera 4 GTS.

The selling prices are as follows:

  • Porsche 911 Carrera – RM1,430,000
  • Porsche 911 Carrera 4 GTS – RM1,890,000

The main highlight is undoubtedly the introduction of the first hybrid variant for the 911 lineup, the Carrera 4 GTS.

Powered by a 3.6-liter T-Hybrid powertrain producing 541 PS and 610 Nm of torque, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds before reaching a top speed of 312 km/h.

This power boost is complemented by a single electric gas exhaust turbocharger (adding 15 PS), ensuring responsive and dynamic power delivery.

Additionally, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS is equipped with a 54 PS/150 Nm electric motor, supported by a compact battery pack capable of storing up to 1.9 kWh of energy.

Despite the significant system changes, the weight increase of the 911 Carrera 4 GTS is only around 50 kg compared to the previous model.

Standard features for the 911 Carrera 4 GTS include a rear-wheel steering system, sport suspension with a multi-damping system (PASM), a ground clearance that is 10 mm lower, a special sports exhaust system, and a combination of 20/21-inch rims with wider rear tires.

It also comes with an active cooling system designed to optimize the aerodynamics of the vehicle depending on current needs.

Those who prefer a 911 without hybrid assistance can opt for the 911 Carrera, which retains the 3.0-liter twin-turbo boxer engine but with an output of up to 394 PS and 450 Nm of torque.

The acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in just 4.1 seconds (or 3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono package) and a top speed of 294 km/h.

Unlike the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, the 911 Carrera can be equipped with 19/20-inch rims, Exclusive Design rim options with more aerodynamic carbon blades, as well as an aero kit option to further enhance driving performance.

Other exterior features include matrix LED headlights with a four-point graphic, redesigned rear light strip, and restructured rear grille, along with the option of HD matrix LED headlights with over 32,000 lighting points.

Inside the cabin, the 911 now features a 12.6-inch curved digital cluster screen with seven display options, including a classic meter display, a central 10.9-inch screen, support for Apple CarPlay, Siri voice command assistance, and built-in applications like Spotify and Apple Music.

It is important to note that the Porsche 911 Carrera is available only in rear-wheel drive Coupe version, while the 911 Carrera 4 GTS is offered in all-wheel drive (AWD) with both Coupe and Targa body style options.

Bermaz to showcase Mazda3 Concept prototype this weekend at 1 Utama

The Bermaz Auto Showcase taking place this weekend, will be further enlivened by the exhibition of the Mazda3 Concept prototype model.

Produced by the MazdaSports division, this prototype model recalls the Mazda3 MS Edition launched in 2016.

Several enhancements have been made, such as a complete aerodynamic body kit with a rear spoiler, Enkei Tuning SC22 rims in Matte Gunmetal, Endless Super Street S-Sports brake pads, and MS-branded exhaust tips.

The handling aspect has also been improved with the installation of a front strut bar.

Finally, the exterior of this hatchback is adorned with exclusive body stickers complete with red decorative stripes.

The cabin of the Mazda3 Concept is enhanced with suede-wrapped seating featuring red stripe accents, a suede-wrapped steering wheel complemented with red stitching.

This sporty Mazda3 Concept will be displayed at the Bermaz Auto Showcase at the following locations:

Volvo EX90 and XC90 facelift officially launched in Malaysia – starting price RM418,888

Volvo Car Malaysia has officially launched two models of three-row SUVs today: the 2025 Volvo EX90 and the facelifted 2025 Volvo XC90 for the local market.

As showcased last month, the Volvo EX90 is a fully electric SUV built on the SPA2 platform, in contrast to the second-generation Volvo XC90, which uses the SPA platform.

Here are some brief details regarding both the EX90 and XC90 SUVs for the local market:

 

Volvo EX90

Volvo Malaysia is offering the EX90 in a single variant, the Twin Motor Performance, which features a power output of 517 hp and 910 Nm. It is paired with a 111 kWh nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) battery pack that offers a range of 623 km.

The EX90 can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.

In terms of dimensions, the EX90 is indeed larger than the XC90, measuring 5,037 mm in length, 1,964 mm in width, 1,747 mm in height, and with a wheelbase of 2,985 mm.

The EX90 supports AC fast charging of up to 11 kW (10-hour charging time) and DC fast charging of up to 250 kW, allowing the battery to charge from 10% to 80% state of charge (SoC) in just 30 minutes.

Standard features of the EX90 include 21-inch wheels, front and rear LED lights, doors with soft-close functionality, and the new Sand Dune color.

Inside the cabin, equipment includes a nine-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.5-inch infotainment screen, Bowers & Wilkins 3D audio system with 25 speakers, four-zone climate control, front seat massage functions, and a panoramic glass roof.

Additionally, the Volvo EX90 is equipped with a housing for a LIDAR sensor, along with five radars, eight cameras, and 16 ultrasonic sensors.

The Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin is priced at RM442,888.

 

Volvo XC90 facelift

This marks the second facelift for the XC90 model after the first facelift was introduced in 2019.

A significant change is the design approach, which now resembles that of the EX30 and EX90 models, featuring more pronounced Thor’s Hammer headlights and a wider grille.

Moreover, the XC90 facelift is equipped with an Active Chassis Air suspension system and 20-inch wheels.

Volvo has placed greater emphasis on the cabin space, with an updated layout, an 11.2-inch vertical infotainment screen that supports Google Maps, a crystal Orrefors gear selector, Nappa leather upholstery, and much more.

For the Malaysian market, the Volvo XC90 is offered in the T8 AWD variant, powered by a 2.0-liter turbo engine (310 PS/400 Nm) paired with an electric motor (145 PS/309 Nm).

The total power output of this SUV reaches 462 hp, enabling acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds, while achieving fuel consumption as low as 1.8 liters per 100 km.

The battery pack capacity is 18.8 kWh, allowing for a zero-emission range of 77 km, with a full AC charge at 6.4 kW taking three hours.

In the Malaysian market, the Volvo XC90 Ultra T8 PHEV is priced starting from RM434,888, or the light hybrid version, the Ultra B5, which is priced at RM418,888.

Proton vehicle sales surge by 23.9 percent in March

Proton ended the first quarter (Q1 2025) with total sales of 13,918 units for the month of March, driven by domestic and export sales, including contributions from the smart and e.MAS brands.

Compared to February 2025, Proton demonstrated a performance increase of 23.9 percent in March, and sales were also up by 9.6 percent compared to the same period in 2024.

Proton is also expecting a market share of 18.9 percent for the first quarter (Q1 2025) based on a total industry volume (TIV) of 184,652 units.

As previously reported, strong sales performance in the first three months has crowned the Proton e.MAS 7 as the best-selling electric vehicle (EV).

The Proton Saga continues to dominate as Proton’s best-selling model, with total sales reaching 6,154 units (up 22.5 percent), followed by the Proton S70 with 2,125 units (up 77.5 percent), the Proton X50 (1,858 units), the Proton Persona (1,482 units), the Proton X70 (835 units), the Proton Iriz (337 units), and finally, the Proton X90 (302 units).

Meanwhile, Proton’s export operations continue to expand in Q1 2025, with export volumes increasing by 211 percent to 417 units in March compared to the previous month.

As a result, Proton’s total export sales rose by 11.4 percent compared to the same period in 2024, with the Proton Saga leading with 410 units exported to foreign markets.

Proton is also expanding its export footprint with shipments to countries like Nepal and Trinidad & Tobago.

In addition, Roslan Abdullah, CEO of Proton Edar, anticipates that Proton will launch several new models, in line with what was announced by Proton’s CEO Dr. Li Chunrong earlier last year.

One of the new models is the updated Proton Saga, which is currently undergoing extensive road testing in Malaysia. Another potential addition may be the facelifted Proton X50, a segment B SUV that is also in the testing phase.

Mazda MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition now in Malaysia – RM315,000

Bermaz Motor, as the exclusive distributor of Mazda vehicles, has announced the availability of the Mazda MX-5 35th Anniversary Edition special model.

This special edition Mazda MX-5 is introduced as a tribute to the four generations of this sports car, renowned for its exhilarating driving characteristics and timeless design.

For the local market, this limited anniversary MX-5 is only offered with a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G engine (181 hp/205 Nm) paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Each unit features a specially created Artisan Red Premium color using unique Takuminuri technology, Bright Metallic 17-inch alloy wheels, and a ’35th Anniversary’ badge accompanied by a serial number.

The cabin comes equipped with Tan leather upholstery, the 35th Anniversary Edition logo on the headrests and floor mats, as well as Artisan Red accents on the air conditioning vents and door panels.

In addition to the anniversary edition, all MX-5 variants have received cosmetic changes on the exterior.

For instance, this includes headlights with eye-like LED DRL graphics, taillights featuring an ‘afterburner’ effect, and a rear bumper equipped with reflectors and fog lights.

The cabin showcases a redesigned meter cluster, a frameless rearview mirror, an 8.8-inch infotainment screen, Type-C USB charging ports, and an HD rearview camera.

 

In terms of driving dynamics, Mazda has improved the EPAS steering system for smoother operation and more linear, responsive characteristics.

Meanwhile, the manual 2.0L variant now incorporates DSC-TRACK (Driving Stability Control Track Mode) and an Asymmetric Limited Slip Differential (Asymmetric LSD) for optimal control in various conditions, including spirited driving sessions.

Except for the anniversary edition, all MX-5 variants can be optioned in Deep Crystal Blue, Soul Red Crystal, Machine Gray, Snowflake White Pearl, Jet Black, and the new Aero Gray color.

2025 Jetour Dashing officially launched in Malaysia – prices starting from RM109,800

Jetour Auto Malaysia has officially launched the Dashing 2025 model, a C-segment SUV, for the local market today.

Offered in two main variants, Comfort and Prime, the Jetour Dashing is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that produces 154 hp at 5,500 rpm and 230 Nm of torque between 1,750 and 4,000 rpm.

Power is transmitted to the front wheels through a six-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

Three driving modes are available: Economy, Comfort, and Sport.

Using the Kunlun architecture, the Jetour Dashing has dimensions of 4,590 mm in length, 1,900 mm in width, 1,685 mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,720 mm.

This positions the Dashing to compete with Japanese C-segment SUV models such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota Corolla Cross.

Standard exterior features include 18-inch rims, LED headlights and taillights, and a power-operated tailgate.

The cargo space can hold up to 486 liters and can expand to 977 liters when the second-row seats, which have a 60:40 split ratio, are folded flat.

Inside the cabin, the Dashing features a 10.25-inch digital cluster display, a 10.25-inch infotainment screen, support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a CN95 cabin air filter, a 50W wireless device charging slot, automatic climate control, leather seat upholstery, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat, and a four-speaker audio system.

The Prime variant adds additional features such as 19-inch rims, a panoramic glass roof, four-way power adjustment for the front passenger seat, ambient lighting, and a 360-degree surround monitoring system.

In terms of safety, the Jetour Dashing includes features such as six airbags, ABS, EBD, brake assist, traction control, a tire pressure monitoring system, and ISOFIX mounts.

The Prime variant enhances safety with features such as a blind spot monitoring system, lane change warning, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot detection, door opening alerts, and a 180-degree transparent floor view.

For the Malaysian market, the Jetour Dashing is priced starting from RM109,800 to RM116,800.

Proton e.MAS 7 remains as best-selling EV in Malaysia

In March, Pro-Net, a subsidiary of Proton, successfully sold 797 units of the Proton e.MAS 7 electric SUV.

This brings the total deliveries of the e.MAS 7 to 1,853 units for the first quarter (Q1) of 2025, contributing to a market share of 30 percent thus far this year, making it the number one EV in Malaysia.

According to Zhang Qiang, the CEO of Pro-Net, “We would like to extend our gratitude to customers for their unwavering support and confidence in the Proton e.MAS 7, as well as their trust in us to provide an ecosystem that allows them to enjoy an electric driving experience.”

“This achievement will motivate us to continuously improve in offering high-quality products and provide a better ownership experience for our customers,” he stated.

For the Malaysian market, the Proton e.MAS 7 is available in two variants, the Prime priced at RM105,800 and the Premium priced at RM119,800, applicable for the first 6,000 bookings.

To facilitate users, Proton has established 75 DC charging points with up to 120 kW at several dealerships.

Additionally, owners can access over 90 percent of existing charging points in Malaysia operated by Gentari, JomCharge, chargEV, DC Handal, Chargesini, Carput Zap, RExharge, and Charge+, along with a live integrated charging map through the Proton e.MAS app.

Zhang Qiang further remarked, “Our goal is not just to sell cars; we aim to develop a complete ecosystem that involves not only 36 dealerships but also the entire EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia.

“We are also working closely with charging point operators (CPOs) to facilitate easier EV ownership as we want our customers to transition smoothly from ICE to EV.”

2026 Toyota GR86 Yuzu Edition arrives in the U.S. market

Eleven years ago, Toyota launched a special edition sports car under the youth-oriented Scion brand, known as the Scion FR-S Release Series 1.0.

Unfortunately, due to lackluster demand, the Scion brand was discontinued just two years after the FR-S model was introduced.

Now, the spirit of that limited edition car returns with the 2026 GR86 Yuzu Edition, specifically for the American market.

Starting with the Premium variant, Toyota has added a Performance Package that includes Brembo brakes and SACHS dampers to this yellow GR86.

Remainder of FB, FC, FD, FE & MALAYSIA plates now available via MySIKAP portal

The Road Transport Department (JPJ) has announced the opening of registration for Malaysians who still wish to obtain the remainder Putrajaya registration numbers series (FB, FC, FD & FE) as well as the MALAYSIA plates starting today (April 8).

Interested parties can log in to the MySIKAP portal, select the ‘Vehicles’ menu, and click on the ‘Vehicle Number Reservation’ option.

Next, select the ‘Special Registration Numbers’ menu to choose the desired number before making payment either by credit card or internet banking.

The ‘F’ registration numbers were first introduced on June 1, 2016, to replace the original PUTRAJAYA series which had reached the limit of 9,999 vehicles.

This was subsequently replaced with FA on July 22, 2017, followed by FB (May 16, 2018), FC (May 2, 2019), FD (April 12, 2021), and FE in April 2022.

Porsche 911 Hybrid now available for order in Malaysia

Sime Darby Auto Performance, the official distributor of Porsche vehicles in Malaysia, has announced the introduction of two new variants of the 911 sports car: the 911 Carrera and the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, with prices starting from RM1.43 million.

The highlight is undoubtedly the debut of the first hybrid variant of the 911, the Carrera 4 GTS.

Powered by a 3.6-liter T-Hybrid powertrain producing 541 PS and 610 Nm of torque, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS is capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.0 seconds before reaching a top speed of 312 km/h.

This power boost is also aided by a single electric exhaust turbocharger (providing an additional 15 PS) that ensures responsive and dynamic power delivery.

Additionally, the 911 Carrera 4 GTS is equipped with a 54 PS/150 Nm electric motor, supported by a compact battery pack capable of storing energy up to 1.9 kWh.

Despite the significant system changes, the added weight of the 911 Carrera 4 GTS is merely around 50 kg compared to the previous model.

Standard features for the 911 Carrera 4 GTS include a rear-axle steering system, sports suspension with a multi-chamber damper system (PASM), a ride height that is 10 mm lower, a custom sports exhaust system, and a wheel combination of 20/21 inches with wider rear tires.

It is also equipped with an active cooling system that optimizes the vehicle’s aerodynamic aspects based on current requirements.

For those who prefer the 911 without any hybrid assistance, the 911 Carrera is still available, retaining the 3.0-liter twin-turbo boxer engine but with an increased output of up to 394 PS and 450 Nm.

Acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h is achieved in just 4.1 seconds (3.9 seconds with the Sport Chrono package), with a maximum speed of 294 km/h.

Unlike the 911 Carrera 4 GTS, the 911 Carrera can be fitted with 19/20-inch wheels, an Exclusive Design wheel option with more aerodynamic carbon blades, and an aero kit option to further enhance driving performance.

Other exterior features include matrix LED headlights with a four-point graphic, redesigned rear light strips, and a modified rear grille structure, as well as an option for HD matrix LED headlights with over 32,000 light points.

Inside the cabin, the 911 now boasts a 12.6-inch curved digital cluster screen with seven display options, including a classic meter display, a 10.9-inch central screen, Apple CarPlay support, Siri voice command assistance, and built-in Spotify and Apple Music applications.

It is worth noting that the Porsche 911 Carrera is only available in a rear-wheel-drive Coupé version, while the 911 Carrera 4 GTS is offered in an all-wheel-drive (AWD) version, with either Coupé or Targa body styles.

Narushi Yazaki is now the Managing Director and CEO of Honda Malaysia

Honda Malaysia has announced the appointment of Narushi Yazaki as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, effective April 1, 2025.

Narushi Yazaki succeeds Hironobu Yoshimura, who has led Honda Malaysia for the past three years and is currently serving at Honda’s headquarters in Tokyo.

According to Honda Malaysia, Yazaki has over 25 years of experience, holding key leadership positions in several countries, including the United States, Japan, and Thailand.

Prior to serving in Malaysia, Yazaki worked with Corporate Administration Operations at Honda Motor Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Japan.

“I am honored to take on this responsibility at Honda Malaysia, a market known for its dynamic growth and significant contributions to the Honda brand in the Asia and Oceania region.

“I aim to build on the strong foundation laid by my predecessors and continue driving Honda Malaysia’s growth and success in this thriving market,” he stated.

Price war initiated by Chinese brands disrupts local automotive industry

The price war launched by a handful of Chinese automotive brands may benefit consumers, but it can have a substantial effect on the local automotive industry.

This concern was voiced by Proton’s Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Roslan Abdullah, during an interview with Berita Harian.

He explained that the massive discounts would create a ripple effect on local vendors who have long supplied components and parts for vehicles.

“The impact of this price war not only affects OEMs with manufacturing and assembly plants in the country, but also has repercussions for local vendors and dealers.

“This situation arises when an oversupply of stocks increases as customers prefer vehicles offered at lower prices. At the same time, some customers are adopting a wait-and-see approach, hoping prices will continue to fall,” he told BH.

Additionally, the price war will also affect the used vehicle market, where customers are likely to opt for new vehicles due to more competitive pricing.

“This will significantly impact the depreciation value of the affected vehicles. The trade-in market will also experience negative impacts,” he stated.

Due to high operating costs (including manufacturing, vendor, and supply chain costs), local OEM brands cannot lower vehicle prices to the same level as Chinese brands to sustain their business.

“We cannot reduce prices to an extremely low level; however, we can offer discounts or promotions such as cash rebates and accessory packages to balance market prices,” he said.

In this regard, Proton is taking careful steps to ensure the company’s long-term profitability, considering it employs more than 7,000 workers and involves over 5,000 employees in its sales network.

“Large-scale vendors may be able to survive because they have partnerships with other brands. However, small vendors that rely on a single brand will surely be affected,” he noted.

According to him, most brands reducing prices benefit from completely built-up (CBU) or semi-knocked down (SKD) concepts, which require lower investments compared to local OEMs like PROTON.

“Their investments in Malaysia are still minimal. Therefore, they can offer substantial discounts because their operating costs are also low. However, this puts pressure on companies operating in Malaysia in the long term,” he explained.

Roslan also emphasized the importance of reassessing the impact of this price war to protect well-established brands in Malaysia.

“Foreign direct investment (FDI) is the government’s target; however, a review needs to be conducted to ensure local assembly brands (CKD) with their own factories and vendor networks can continue to be resilient,” he stated.
