Ora 07 Long Range, feminine EV with masculine personality – Test Drive

The first time this model stormed into memory was when attending the Auto Shanghai 2023 event last year.

Ora 07, or better known as Ora Lightning Cat in the international market, indeed brings a controversial design, reminiscent of the Porsche Panamera sedan and Porsche 911 models.

To place it on par with million-dollar models may be an unfair assessment.

Ora 07 is the second electric vehicle (EV) model introduced by GWM Malaysia after the cute Ora Good Cat hatchback, with a price offer below RM200,000 (RM169,800).

Compared to closest competitors like BYD Seal and Tesla Model 3, is the Ora 07 just an ordinary EV?

Based on a recent test drive experience, the definitive answer we can give is, “No!”

1. Feminine Design

BYD Seal and Tesla Model 3 present a more traditional sedan body design.

The Ora 07, on the other hand, is more reminiscent of the Porsche Panamera body, with a more tapered roof line, followed by a quite long body dimensions.

The rear also features an electrically powered adaptive spoiler that can be raised or lowered as needed, and the front lights, when viewed from any angle, resemble the 911.

Overall, this is not a negative aspect of the Ora 07. It is suitable for those with a feminine spirit and individuals looking for something different in the electric sedan segment.

However, the all-red rear light design may confuse road users and make it difficult to determine whether the signal is for turning or not.

2. Bugatti, Porsche Inspired Interior

Not content with just the exterior, the interior layout also draws much inspiration from famous models.

The high central console seems to take inspiration from Bugatti, while the front digital cluster screen clearly brings Porsche elements.

At the very least, the layout shown in this space is much better and more elegant compared to cars that simply place an iPad screen on the dashboard during development and then sell it to the public.

The writer particularly likes the design of the Ora 07’s digital cluster screen, it looks fresher.

However, the downside is that it does not come with theme options that match its round design. Moreover, there are no options for available analog meter graphics!

3. Easy to Operate, but Still Troublesome

One thing the writer appreciates about the Ora 07, apart from the support for Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, is the presence of manual control buttons in the central area for the air conditioning system.

It offers controls for fan speed and cabin temperature. Easy to operate using muscle memory. However, that’s the only benefit provided.

There are no physical fan speed controls included on the air conditioning vent. This means that if you feel bothered by the cold air blowing into your nose, you will have to delve into additional menus for climate control on the infotainment screen.

Yes, the Ora 07 includes several types of air flow mode on the screen for use during the summer, but it’s not a feature that can make daily driving more pleasant.

Fortunately, the Ora 07 is equipped with an engaging 11-speaker Infinity audio system, so you can enjoy your favorite songs after fiddling with the climate control settings.

4. Comfortable Cabin, but…

The use of premium materials dominates the Ora 07’s cabin space. It looks luxurious.

The standard factory-installed sports seats also contribute to the comfort aspect, as do the quite cushy rear seats.

Apart from the long wheelbase, one thing that makes the space look more spacious is the fairly wide and elongated panoramic glass roof.

Because of this, rear passengers can enjoy more headroom. Just avoid long-distance travel for extended periods when the sun is directly overhead.

There are no switches available to open the glass panel structure, and no sunshades provided in that area to filter out the sunlight that can burn your hair.

5. Limited Cargo Space Access

This sedan offers a cargo space of 333 liters, sufficiently enough for daily use.

Although the Ora 07 comes standard with a fastback sedan body shape, it does not provide the ability to open the rear extensively like any other aeroback model.

The somewhat limited opening may make it difficult for you to load larger items.

Fortunately, the second-row seats can be folded, allowing you to place longer items in the rear.

Additionally, there are several small storage spaces available in the cabin, further enhancing the practical aspect of the Ora 07.

6. Masculine Driving Experience

As standard, the Ora 07 comes with a single powerful electric motor setting of 201 hp and 340 Nm that drives the front wheels.

The power is sufficient to propel the electric sedan in urban routes, with no issues of power shortage.

Aggressive acceleration can also be achieved in a manner that is quite smooth and seamless, without resulting in the usual power surge effect experienced in other electric cars.

What makes the writer excited about this electric sedan is the delightful driving experience package that is hard to find in any other electric car.

Despite featuring various feminine characteristics, the driving aspect of the Ora 07 is more masculine. It’s like a car with dual personalities.

For a moment, the writer completely forgot that the Ora 07 is a heavy electric sedan (2.5 tons) when testing its handling on winding roads.

The steering response is good enough to ensure the car stays on the right track, in addition to the chassis tuning and suspension system that make the driving experience of this electric sedan quite enjoyable on the winding roads of Negeri Sembilan.

Body roll is also felt at a minimum level, making the writer more enthusiastic to continue pressing the accelerator pedal every time a straight road is connected to a curve.

The use of Hankook Ventus S1 Evo3 tires also helps the sedan grip well on the asphalt surface.

Adding vibrancy to the Ora 07’s driving experience is the simulated sound of a fake engine that can be activated through the infotainment screen.

At the very least, it can satisfy your longing for the sound of an engine, and the writer believes this feature is way much better than the spaceship-like sound found in more expensive EV models.

There are several driving modes included that can be accessed through the central manual button, including the Well Being mode, which will deactivate the regenerative braking function and allow the car to continue coasting when the foot is removed from the accelerator pedal.

Like an ICE car, isn’t it?

7. Concerns about Range Anxiety?

We tested the Long Range variant paired with an 83.5 kWh battery pack.

According to NEDC data, the sedan can travel up to 640 km on a full charge, a figure that may be challenging but not impossible to achieve.

Based on our usage, we managed to record a driving range of 470 km before the battery reached 15 percent state of charge (SoC), with an estimated remaining range of about 102 km.

In our opinion, the Ora 07 is suitable for use as a daily commuter car or occasionally for intercity travel beyond two stages.

DC charging up to 88 kW allows the battery to be charged to 80 percent in just half an hour, meaning you won’t have to wait long if you need to undertake a long journey in the Ora 07.

8. Safety

As standard, the Ora 07 comes with advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) Level 2, which includes several key functions such as adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, autonomous emergency braking, smart lane keeping, and lane centering assistance.

The adaptive cruise control feature proves effective when on the highway to maintain a safe driving distance.

However, the way the lane centering assistance operates on the other hand may be perceived as slightly aggressive, especially for those who are confident in their driving skills.

Conclusion

With a starting price of RM169,800, this Ora 07 Long Range could be an alternative electric sedan that caters to the preferences of buyers who seek something different and want to stand out from the norm.

Although it has some shortcomings, all those issues may fade away when you are able to enjoy the very satisfying driving experience this sedan offers.

Don’t believe it? Even now, the writer still can’t believe it!

Ford registers patent for driver protection system from accidentally becoming drug mules

One of the major concerns while using rental cars or renting out cars to third parties is the risk of them being used for drug trafficking by irresponsible individuals.

With current advancements, Ford aims to leverage advanced technology loaded in modern vehicles to ensure that you are not the next unwitting participant.

The patent for this system of detecting unknown items has been filed by Ford in March 2023, and was publicly released on September 19th.

According to Ford, this system will utilize various sensor units and cameras to detect suspicious activities, check the vehicle’s weight, and scan for any unrecognized GPS radio frequencies.

The system will then activate the camera to record any suspicious movements and store it as evidence.

Additionally, the system will also track any changes in driving patterns and behaviors resulting from the addition of unknown weight loads.

It is just a patent for now, but it is not implausible that one day this system will be realized to combat the issue of drug trafficking.

F1 teams excited to return to Sepang Circuit – MAM President

The last time the Sepang International Circuit hosted the prestigious sport of Formula One was in 2017 since its introduction to the country in 1999.

Despite not being revved up by the roar of F1 engines for quite some time, the circuit still remains a favorite among some drivers, besides being a common mention on social media every time the name Sepang International Circuit is brought up.

Berita Harian reported that the President of the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM), Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir, revealed that the sport could be reintroduced at the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit, but emphasized that something fresher needs to be introduced.

Among the changes that could be made is to host races at night.

He also revealed that several F1 teams currently competing are excited at the prospect of the race being brought back to the PETRONAS Sepang International Circuit.

“Perhaps if we have the opportunity to be organizers once again, we need to make a difference. F1 is no longer just about watching 20 cars race on the track, it is more than that now.

“We need complementary events to enhance the Grand Prix races both on the track and in the capital during race week. Conferences and concerts have now become part of the F1 race week.

“We could also organize races at night using lighting and it would be cooler. Bahrain has already done this from day races to night races and it proves that it is not impossible to do.”

However, Mokhzani emphasized that reorganizing F1 in Malaysia is not an easy task as it requires very high costs.

Singapore ex-transport minister pleads guilty to bribery charges

Former Singaporean Transport Minister S Iswaran has pleaded guilty to charges of receiving gifts while in government office, according to Reuters.

Iswaran is the first Singapore cabinet minister to be prosecuted in court after the last corruption case reported in 1986 could not be tried in court due to the death of the country’s minister of state.

The 62-year-old former minister, who was arrested in July last year, was accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of Singapore dollars in bribes from real estate tycoon Ong Beng Seng, some of which were to advance Ong’s business interests.

According to the charge sheet, Iswaran was alleged to have received gifts in the form of tickets to English Premier League football matches, musicals, flights on Ong’s private plane, and tickets to the Singapore Formula One GP.

According to Channel News Asia (CNA), he pleaded guilty to charges of obstructing justice and receiving gifts of value without payment or inadequate payment from someone involved with him in an official capacity.

Meanwhile, the prosecution has reduced Iswaran’s charges to five out of 35, while the remaining 30 charges will be taken into account for sentencing.

For the charge of receiving gifts, a person can be sentenced to up to two years in prison and fined, while for the offense of obstructing justice, Iswaran could face up to seven years in prison and fines.

More incentives from government to encourage people to buy EVs – Kenanga Research

Kenanga Research predicts that the government will provide more incentives to boost the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) among the people of Malaysia, as reported by Utusan Malaysia.

The research firm said that this aligns with the national target for EVs and hybrid vehicles to constitute 15 percent of the total industry sales (TIV) by the year 2030, and further, to reach 38 percent by 2040.

“The current vehicle sales are supported by new battery electric vehicles (BEVs) enjoying sales and service tax (SST) exemptions and EV facility incentives until 2025 for completely built-up (CBU) and until 2027 for completely knocked down (CKD) units.

“New registrations for BEVs surged from 274 units in 2021 to over 3,400 units in 2022, 10,159 units in 2023, and 6,617 units in the first half of 2024 (according to the quarterly report),” the research notes stated.

According to Kenanga Research, the targeted reduction in petrol fuel subsidies expected to be implemented by the government may also increase the interest of the M40 group in EVs.

“The M40 group may refrain from buying new cars, or they may choose to switch to smaller vehicles or switch to EVs to reduce their fuel bills after the rationalization of fuel subsidies,” it said.

Meanwhile, the research firm mentioned that the Malaysian government will also expedite the approval of charging stations across the country.

“The current operating number of charging stations stands at 3,951, and it is expected to nearly triple to 10,000 by the end of this year,” it said.

The research firm also maintained its forecast for new vehicle sales in Malaysia for 2024, also known as TIV, at 740,000 units (eight percent lower), which is slightly more conservative compared to the forecast of 765,000 units by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).

Overall, the firm said, the income visibility level of the industry remains good, supported by a balance of orders totaling 170,000 units at the end of July 2024, unchanged from the previous month.

“More than half of this balance consists of new models, indicating the attraction of new models to car buyers,” it concluded, emphasizing that the rationalization of petrol subsidies and the implementation of e-invoices could put pressure on vehicle sales in the second quarter of 2024.

Geely wants to establish assembly plant in Europe

Chinese automotive company Geely is currently scouting suitable locations to establish a large-scale production facility on the European continent.

However according to Reuters sources, Geely Auto Group’s Vice President Li Chuanhai confirmed that the plans were “not 100 percent” certain while speaking in Frankfurt, Germany last week.

Geely had previously held discussions with the Polish government, but the authorities in the country did not see Geely as an ideal investment partner.

In Frankfurt, Geely has opened a new facility where it will serve as the location for testing and developing 13 new models of electric vehicles to meet stricter European standards.

In addition to Geely, several Chinese automotive manufacturers, including Chery and GWM, are also planning to establish assembly plants in Europe to avoid higher tariffs imposed on imported EVs from the mainland.

Nissan plans to sell GT-R R35 for another 17 years

Do you know that the Nissan GT-R R35 generation is now 17 years old?

Compared to others, the Nissan GT-R is quite aged, but Nissan actually still intends to continue producing the R35 for another 17 years.

In an interview with Top Gear, Nissan’s Global Product Chief, Pierre Loing, stated, “(The Nissan GT-R) has been on sale for 17 years, and we want to continue it for another 17 years, but regulatory compliance is causing issues.”

For the past few years, Nissan has faced challenges in continuing the sales of the GT-R model.

In Europe, the supercar model’s sales were discontinued in July 2021 due to new noise regulations imposed.

It was also pulled from the Australian market due to failure to comply with stricter side-impact crash test regulations.

Normally, a manufacturer would provide a replacement model when production of the current model is discontinued.

However, this isn’t the case for the GT-R.

After ending the R35 GT-R production in 2025, there will be a gap for a long period before the successor model (Hyper Force) emerges in 2030.

“If you look at the history of the GT-R badge, we’ve had gaps before. We showed the GT-R concept in 2001, ended R34 Skyline GT-R production in 2002, then the R35 didn’t launch until 2007.”

“The gap between the ‘Kenmeri’ Skyline GT-R ending in 1975 and the R32 starting in 1989 was even larger.”

“The GT-R is strong enough to live with these gaps in its production. And we need to have a gap, because going into the electrified world, there is a lot of debate about ‘what is a GT-R in an era of electrification?’ We don’t have all the answers yet. We are in the middle of all those debates.”

It’s highly likely that when the new generation Nissan GT-R emerges in the coming years, it will be positioned as a higher-end model compared to the Z and upcoming Silvia.

Toyota Australia develops V8-powered GR Supra to race against Mustang, Camaro

Depending on the market, the Toyota GR Supra can be found with a choice of BMW engines, either a 2.0-liter inline-four cylinder engine (258 PS/400 Nm) or a 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder engine producing up to 387 PS/500 Nm of power.

However, for racing purposes, Toyota will sideline the German-made heart and prioritize a V8 engine to be fitted inside the GR Supra.

The V8-powered GR Supra race machine will compete in the Supercars Championship in Australia starting in 2026, with Toyota becoming the third manufacturer to join the competition against Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro.

Reportedly, the V8-powered GR Supra race machine was internally developed by Toyota Australia in Altona to comply with the GEN3 Supercars Championship regulations.

The mentioned V8 engine already exists in high-performance Lexus vehicles such as the IS F, GS F, LC 500, and RC-F.

The naturally aspirated 5.0-liter aluminum heart (code 2UR-GSE) is capable of producing up to 481 PS/535 Nm of torque in the RC-F model, or 477 PS with a peak torque of 540 Nm in the LC 500 model.

Returning to the V8-powered GR Supra race machine, it will showcase the racing livery of the Walkinshaw Andretti United (WAU) team and will be piloted by drivers Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood.

The WAU team previously raced under the Holden brand from 1987 to 2023, before switching to the Ford brand for three seasons, and will collaborate with Toyota starting in 2026.

Don’t celebrate too early, as this V8-powered GR Supra will only exist in racing form.

The road-going GR Supra will still continue with the inline-six cylinder engine offerings until its production ceases in the coming years.

However, before that, Toyota is reported to launch the Supra GRMN model with a retuned inline-six cylinder engine, a stiffer chassis, and improved aerodynamics.

Indonesia Air Force orders 4 Airbus H145 helicopters

The Indonesian Air Force has placed an order for four Airbus H145 helicopters as part of its training modernisation programme, according to Bernama.

These multi-mission helicopters will be used for military training and light search-and-rescue missions.

The order was announced this week at the Bali International Airshow as part of an agreement between the Air Force and aerospace company PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI), according to a statement from Airbus on Wednesday.

Under the agreement, Airbus will deliver H145s to PTDI, which will manage the reassembly and completion of the mission equipment and other customisation work at its facility in Bandung, Indonesia, for final delivery to the air force.

“We’re fully confident that the highly versatile H145 will make a positive impact in enhancing its military pilot training and at the same time be a critical enabler for its search-and-rescue operations,” Airbus Helicopters Asia-Pacific head Vincent Dubrule said.

PTDI president director Gita Amperiawan said the collaboration not only strengthens the long-standing partnership between PTDI and Airbus, but also showcases our commitment to providing innovative and reliable solutions for national operational needs

“Through this close partnership, PTDI will not only support the delivery of the H145 helicopters but will also enhance our capabilities in terms of integration and assembly at our facilities,” Gita said.

Airbus Helicopters and Indonesia have enjoyed a nearly 50-year partnership, beginning in 1976 with PTDI’s licence to produce the NBO-105 helicopter.

PTDI became a key supplier for the Airbus H225’s rear fuselage and main airframe in 2008, with full production in place in Indonesia in 2011.

The latest version of Airbus’ H145 adds an innovative five-bladed rotor to the multi-mission H145, increasing the useful load of the helicopter by 150 kilogrammes.

Teenager loses RM2,000 to Yamaha RX-Z scam ads

Lotus Theory 1, a three-seater supercar concept with 1,000 PS power

Lotus seems to be relentless in introducing new powerful electric models.

The latest offering from the British manufacturer is a concept model named Lotus Theory 1.

This electric supercar features dual electric motors with all-wheel drive system capable of generating 1,000 PS of power.

It accelerates from 0-100 km/h in less than 2.5 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 320 km/h.

Its 70 kWh battery pack allows a range of 402 km on a full charge.

The carbon chassis construction also contributes to keeping the weight below 1,600 kg.

Moreover, the exterior design of the Theory 1 is said to be inspired by the S1 Esprit, showcasing sharp edges and a cab-forward shape reminiscent of the mid-engined layout of the Esprit model.

The concept model also introduces several interesting innovations.

For instance, the adaptive robotic system Lotuswear, developed in collaboration with Motorskins, provides tactile feedback to the driver through the bumps generated on the seats and the steering wheel.

Lotus Theory 1 also comes with steer-by-wire steering system, allowing the driver to customize steering ratio and response according to individual preferences.

In the center of the carbon tub, Theory 1 features a three-seater layout, where the middle seat is dedicated to the driver, while the passengers sit on the driver’s right and left.

It is equipped with a head-up display screen, along with built-in speakers integrated into the headrest structure for each seat.

Nissan registers ‘Z Warrior’ trademark in Australia

The off-road sports car segment currently joined by the Porsche 911 Dakar and the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato, may soon be enlivened by another newcomer, this time from the Land of the Rising Sun.

According to reports, Nissan has registered the trademark ‘Z Warrior’ with the IP Australia office, indicating the emergence of a Z sports car specifically designed to conquer off-road terrain.

Nissan had previously showcased an intriguing Safari Rally Z Tribute concept, inspired by the Datsun 240Z vehicle that won the 1971 East African Safary Rally.

The new generation Nissan Z has been equipped with a 2-inch higher KW Safari suspension, as well as prototype Nismo Safari 17-inch rims wrapped in Yokohama Geolander M/T G003 tires. Additional lighting units on the hood, bumper, and A-pillars further enhance the appearance of a true rally vehicle.

The original engine unit has also been tuned, with the twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 engine being paired with several Nismo components, including dual clutches, a flywheel, heat exchanger unit, coolant tank, cold air intake system, carbon fiber wire harness protector, and a cat-back exhaust system.

It’s worth noting that Nissan Australia also offers the Warrior trim for models such as Navara and Patrol, both of which come equipped with body kits and accessories specifically designed to conquer various terrains across the globe.

2025 Ford Ranger PHEV debuts, with 275 hp and 690 Nm, 45 km EV range

Approximately a year after the announcement was made, Ford has officially launched the mid-size pickup truck Ford Ranger plug-in hybrid (PHEV) at the IAA Transportation 2024, Hannover.

The 2025 Ford Ranger PHEV is powered by the EcoBoost 2.3-liter turbo engine paired with a single 101 hp electric motor placed within the transmission bellhousing.

Overall, this PHEV can generate up to 275 hp and 690 Nm, much more powerful than the existing petrol and diesel engines for the Ranger (except for the Raptor).

This power is transmitted to the wheels through a 10-speed automatic transmission and the e-4WD system, featuring a rear differential lock and a two-range transfer case.

The 11.8 kWh battery pack allows this pickup truck to travel emission-free for up to 45 km, with a full charge possible in less than four hours.

In addition to the regenerative braking function, the Ford Ranger PHEV is also equipped with the Pro Power Onboard system, enabling owners to use power tools, charge electronic devices, or use it as a generator for off-grid activities.

As standard, the Pro Power Onboard system provides 2.3 kW of power, with an option for 6.9 kW.

Due to the addition of the PHEV system, Ford engineers have tweaked the pickup truck’s suspension system, yet it is still capable of carrying a payload of up to 1 ton and towing loads of up to 3,500 kg.

Externally, the appearance of the Ford Ranger PHEV 2025 is identical to the standard Ford Ranger, except for the presence of a charging port located near the fuel tank cap on the rear fender.

At the same time, Ford has also launched the special edition Ranger Stormtrak exclusively for the Ranger PHEV.

Unique features include 18-inch alloy wheels, honeycomb patterns on the grille, special decals, PHEV badging, and the exclusive Chill Grey color.

Additionally, the Ranger Stormtrak is equipped with Matrix LED headlights, a Flexible Rack System in the rear bed, a B&O sound system with 10 speakers, a 12-inch infotainment screen, and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

The Ford Ranger PHEV will be produced at the Silverton plant in South Africa and will be exported to the markets in Australia, Europe, and New Zealand in time for the spring of 2025.
